EIGHTH MONTH OF THE HITTITE CALENDAR (ITU.8.KAM; ITUAPIN.DU8.A). It was the first month of the Hittite autumn (KUB 38.32 obv. 8). Its main festival, nuntariyašḫa, sometimes could be labeled as the “festival of the eighth month” (EZEN4 ITU.8.KAM), as the oracle list of the snakes associated with the main Hittite festivals mentions “the snake of the eighth month” (KUB 49.1 obv. 7: [M]UŠ ITU.8.KAM). In the eighth month of the year, the pudaḫa-festival was celebrated in Ḫattuša for the Storm-god of Ḫalap and Ḫepat of Ḫalap (KBo 14.142 ii 5–7). As autumn is harvest time, the favorable omina of this month were associated with a good harvest. This month's solar eclipse foreshadowed the epizootic and the decline of agriculture (KUB 4.63 iii 15–17; KUB 8.19 obv. 5–6). The lunar eclipse on the 14th day of this month promised rains and crops, which, however, would destroy the breeding animals, and the fate of the country would be terrible (KUB 8.1 iii 8–11), on the 15th day – the death of seafood or epizootic (KUB 8.1 iii 12–13), on the 16th day – famine (KUB 8.1 iii 14), on the 20th day – the death of the great king in battle (KUB 8.1 iii 15), on the 21st day – death in Elam and the death of crops from mišari-insects (KUB 8.1 iii 16–19). The earthquake this month marked the devastation of the palace and the arrival of the enemy in the country (KUB 8.28 obv. 10–13).The hurricane this month marked a good harvest (KUB 8.35 obv. 18). The child born this month had to mine grain and silver (KUB 8.28 obv. 6).
